Hamas is the legitimate political voice of the Palestinian people. The U.S. and Israel insisted that the Palestinians needed to have elections and a democratically-elected government. They held internationally-monitored elections in 2006. Hamas won. Abbas, a Fatah party member, retained his position as President.
The U.S. and Israel declared that they refused to recognize, negotiate or even talk to Hamas after they won.
They only want to talk to Mahmoud Abbas. Abbas's presidential term ran out, mid-January, 2009, or he has one more year left - there is confusion on this point (more on this, here). Regardless, Abbas gradually lost all moral authority to represent himself as the voice of the Palestinian people after the 2006 elections. A political schism opened pulling the Palestinian people apart. Abbas took control of the West Bank. Hamas rules Gaza.
Hamas has had offers and proposals to negotiate terms with Israel on the table for years. This is surprising information to many of you.
Hamas bombed an Israeli soldier? That Israeli soldier is party to war crimes. Many don't know that, either.
Hamas is acting in defense of the defenseless.
Hamas offered to renew the ceasefire.
Israel rejected the offer. So far down the rabbit hole, many Americans don't even ask themselves why.
Hamas's prime minister Ismail Haniyeh is on record after the 2006 elections as stating: "If Israel withdraws to the '67 borders, then we will establish a peace in stages." (Washington Post; 'We do not wish to throw them into the sea'; Lally Weymouth; 26/02/06.)
The first thing to keep in mind is that some people have agendas. Some people do not want you to know the facts because the facts would get in the way of what they want. In fact, every time a fact presents itself you will find that, like magicians, they will do their best to distract you away from the facts.
Israel targets Palestinian civilians.
Israel thwarts peace.
Israel was not 'patient' with the rockets from Gaza. Israel provoked the military option from the Palestinians because Israel imprisons them in an illegal, immoral military blockade and STARVES THEM. Sderot, a town of 20,000 Israelis in Southern Israel, is one of the most affected by Hamas's ineffectual home-made rockets. Much of Gaza is comprised of refugees from Israel. Where did they get pushed out from? From Sderot, amongst many other places. Sderot used to be called Najd until the original inhabitants were expelled by the IDF.
Egypt is party to the military blockade of Gaza. Egypt is a dictatorship that fears a popular uprising. Egypt gets lots of money each year from the U.S., too. How starving the citizens of Gaza, which inflames the Egyptian street, helps President Hosni Mubarak retain peace of mind only he could say.
What would make Diane happy?, I have heard it asked. I am pleased to offer a reply.
Diane would be happy if we could have an argument based on facts instead of rank propaganda.
Diane would be ecstatic if we cut Israel off of the annual billions in American tax dollars in illegal financial and military aid. This money is used to bank-roll Israel's destruction of Palestinian men, women and children.
We pay for the bullets. We pay for the guns. We pay for the bombs. It is against American law.
Diane does not know how to do a jig but will wing it the day the U.S. begins arresting any charity organizers who continue to raise outlawed funds to financially support the illegal occupation by the Israeli settlers on Palestinian lands.
I will attempt a triple salchow when the U.S. throws them all in jail after rightly classifying them as terrorists. (See you in physio.)
Do a little dance...
